I-287 and I-78 ramps to close tonight for pavement resurfacing

Traffic will be detoured overnight in Somerset County

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the overnight full closures of two ramps as resurfacing work on I-78 advances in Bedminster.

Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight, Friday, April 13 until 4 a.m. the next morning and again on Saturday April 14 from 10 p.m. until 4 a.m. the next morning, NJDOT’s contractor, Crisdel Group, Inc., is scheduled to close the I-287 southbound ramp to I-78 westbound and the I-78 westbound ramp to I-287 northbound for pavement rehabilitation on the ramps.

Beginning at 8 p.m. tonight, April 13, until 6 a.m. the next morning and again on Saturday, April 14 from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. the next morning the contractor is scheduled to close a single lane on I-287 northbound from west of Cedar Brook Road to Burnt Mills Road, and a single lane on I-78 westbound from west of CR 665 to east of the interchange with I-287. Beginning at 10 p.m. tonight and the following night until 4 a.m. the next morning the contractor is scheduled to close two lanes on both I-287 and I-78. One lane will be maintained at all times. The following detours will be in place.

I-287 southbound to I-78 westbound Detour:

  • Motorists on I-287 southbound should take Exit 21A for I-78 eastbound
  • Head east on I-287 and take Exit 33
  • Make a left onto Liberty Corner Road
  • Stay right to take the ramp to I-287 westbound

I-78 westbound to I-287 northbound Detour:

  • Continue on Route I-78 westbound and keep left to stay on I-78 westbound
  • Take exit 26 toward Hunterdon County 523/lamington/I-78E/N Branch
  • Turn left onto Rattlesnake Bridge Road
  • Turn left to merge onto Route I-78 EB
  • Take Exit 29 for Route I-287 toward Route 202/206/I-80/Morristown/Somerville
  • Keep left at fork and merge onto Route I-287 NB

Variable messaging signs (VMS) and detour signing will be used throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the project.

This work is part of a $24 million project to resurface I-78 from Perryville Road/CR 625 in Union to the intersection of I-287 in Bedminster. Improvements include the application of a one-inch High Performance Thin Overlay (HPTO) on the travel lanes and shoulders of this stretch of I-78, as well as upgrades to curbs, drainage, and deck repairs on eight bridges within the project limits. The application of a HPTO will improve ride quality, skid resistance, and reduce noise, as well extend the lifetime of the pavement. The project is expected to be completed in the winter of this year.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and on the NJDOT Facebook page.
