Routes 1 & 9 northbound access from Haynes Avenue and Bessemer Street detoured in Newark
Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue improvement project advances
(Trenton) - The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) today announced a temporary partial ramp closure from Haynes Avenue and Bessemer Street onto Routes 1 & 9 northbound, as the improvement project advances in Newark, Essex County.
Beginning at 9 p.m. tomorrow, Friday, April 20 and continuing for approximately two weeks, NJDOT’s contractor Anselmi and Decicco, Inc. will reduce the Haynes Avenue and Bessemer Street ramps onto Routes 1 & 9 northbound will be closed to mill and pave portions of the Haynes Avenue Bridge.
The following detour will be in effect:
Haynes Avenue and Bessemer Street approach to Routes 1 & 9 northbound detour:
- Motorists on Haynes Avenue and Bessemer Street wishing to travel to Routes 1 & 9 northbound will be detoured to Routes 1 & 9 local southbound
- Continue onto Route 1 southbound
- Take the McClellan Street U-turn
- Stay to the right and take the U-turn over Route 1 & 9 and merge onto Routes 1 & 9 northbound
The $14.2 million federally-funded Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue operational improvements project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow by constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Routes 1&9 southbound, Haynes Avenue, and Bessemer Street, adding a third lane and shoulder between the Haynes Avenue exit ramp and the Anheuser-Busch entrance ramp, a realignment of the Routes 1&9 southbound ramps, and new pavement on the roadways in the area. The project is being accomplished in stages, and is expected to be completed in summer 2018.
Portable variable message signs are being utilized to provide advance notification to the public of all traffic pattern changes associated with the work. Any traffic detours associated with this project will be coordinated with the local police.
