Railroad-crossing repairs begin in Hawthorne
Necessary safety work will require road closure and detours
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced a railroad crossing rehabilitation project that will require a five-day closure and detour of Utter Avenue in Hawthorne, Passaic County.
Beginning at 7 a.m., Monday, April 23, until 7 p.m. Friday, April 27, the two-way traffic on Utter Avenue is scheduled to be closed and detoured at the railroad crossing. The detour includes the temporary restriction of on-street parking on Utter Avenue between Lafayette Avenue and 4th Avenue to help facilitate truck turns. The existing railroad crossing will be removed and replaced with a new concrete crossing and asphalt approach.
The following detours will be in place:
Utter Avenue westbound detour
- Vehicles traveling westbound on Utter Avenue will be directed to turn right onto 7th Avenue, left onto Van Winkle Avenue and left onto 4th Avenue back to Utter Avenue.
Utter Avenue eastbound detour
- Vehicles traveling eastbound on Utter Avenue will be directed to turn left onto 4th Avenue, right onto Van Winkle Avenue, and right onto 6th Avenue, back to Utter Avenue.
In order to provide safer and smoother railroad crossing in Hawthorne, Passaic County, the existing crossings will be replaced with new concrete crossings and new asphalt approaches. This federally funded project is included within NJDOT’s railroad grade-crossing safety program that repairs, upgrades, or removes approximately 30 crossings each year, statewide.
