I-280 westbound bridge deck repairs complete
Eastbound bridge repairs underway
(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the completion of the I-280 westbound bridge deck and the restoration of the normal traffic configuration in Essex County.
Beginning at 10 p.m. Saturday, May 5, NJDOT’s contractor, Joseph M. Sanzari, Inc., is scheduled to remove a construction barrier from the eastbound bridge deck. Early next week, the contractor will remove a barrier from the westbound deck. Additionally, the contractor will replace a joint and perform nightly milling and paving operations on the eastbound bridge deck. Prior to the completion of the work, a temporary crossover sent one lane of westbound traffic onto the eastbound bridge deck.
The federally-funded $7.2 million project began construction in July 2017. The project demolished and replaced the structurally deficient bridge decks on I-280 westbound. NJDOT has coordinated with local officials throughout the design and construction process. The project to repair the eastbound side is currently in concept development and is expected to begin in 2020.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the safety improvements project.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and on our Facebook page.
