I-195 overnight lane closures tonight to replace signs as part of I-295 redesignation in Mercer County

Multiple lanes to be closed overnight near interchange with I-295

Beginning at 9 p.m. tonight, Wednesday, May 9 until 6 a.m. tomorrow, NJDOT’s Contractor South State Inc., is scheduled to close the left and center lanes as well as the left shoulder on I-195 westbound near the interchange with I-295 to install new overhead signs as part of the redesignation of I-95 in New Jersey as I-295. Upon completion of work on the westbound lanes, the contractor will shift to I-195 eastbound, closing the left and center lanes as well as the left shoulder. At least one lane will be maintained in each direction while the work is taking place.

NJDOT has completed changing signs at seven interchanges between what was I-95 Exit 8/Princeton Pike and Exit 1/Route 29. The highway is now redesignated as I-295 with Princeton Pike now Exit 68 through Route 29, which is now Exit 76. Signs have been replaced on most of the approach roads as well.

I-95/I-295 Redesignation Overview
This work is part of a larger project in which a new interchange is being constructed to connect I-95 to I-276/Pennsylvania Turnpike in Bristol Township, Pennsylvania. The Pennsylvania Turnpike connects to the New Jersey Turnpike at Interchange 6 via the New Jersey Turnpike Pearl Harbor Memorial Turnpike Extension in Florence, New Jersey. When the new I-95/Pennsylvania Turnpike interchange is completed in Bristol this fall, these highways will be redesignated as I-95, which will create a continuous I-95 from Pennsylvania through New Jersey.

The section of what was I-95 in New Jersey has been changed to I-295 by extending the existing I-295 from the Route 1 Interchange to the Delaware River. The I-95 section in Pennsylvania, from the Delaware River south to the new interchange, is being redesignated as I-295. Seven interchanges in New Jersey and four interchanges in Pennsylvania have been or will be renumbered, as well as four exits on I-195 in Hamilton. NJDOT is working with the New Jersey Turnpike Authority, Pennsylvania Turnpike Commission, PENNDOT, and the Delaware River Joint Toll Bridge Commission on this project.
