Haynes Avenue Bridge reopens providing access to Routes 1 & 9 in Newark as project nears completion
Ramp to Routes 1 & 9 northbound also to open
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced that the Haynes Avenue Bridge will reopen providing access to Routes 1 & 9 local lanes from Frelinghuysen Avenue as the improvements project nears completion in Newark.
Beginning at 11 p.m., Thursday, May 24, NJDOT’s contractor, Anselmi and Decicco, Inc., will reopen the Haynes Avenue Bridge, providing access to Routes 1 & 9 from Frelinghuysen Avenue.
The exit ramp from Haynes Avenue to Routes 1 & 9 northbound also will be reopened. This ramp has been closed since April 2018 to facilitate work on the newly constructed Haynes Avenue roundabout.
The east side of the bridge area will remain an active work zone to reconstruct the exit ramp from the roundabout to Routes 1 & 9 southbound and adjacent areas. The work will include drainage, utility, lighting and pavement work. Haynes Avenue will have one travel lane in each direction maintained at all times.
The $14.2 million federally-funded Routes 1&9/Haynes Avenue operational improvements project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow by constructing a new roundabout at the intersection of Routes 1&9 southbound, Haynes Avenue, and Bessemer Street, adding a third lane and shoulder between the Haynes Avenue exit ramp and the Anheuser-Busch entrance ramp, a realignment of the Routes 1&9 southbound ramps, and new pavement on the roadways in the area. The project is being accomplished in stages, and is expected to be completed in summer 2018.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors.
