Route 33 Business resurfacing project begins in Monmouth County
Alternating lane and ramp closures necessary
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a resurfacing project that will require shoulder, lane and ramp closures along three miles of Route 33 Business between Freehold and Howell in Monmouth County.
Beginning at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 5, until 3 p.m., and continuing daily for several weeks or until completion, NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt Co. is scheduled to temporarily close the shoulders along Route 33 Business in both directions between Kondrup Way in Freehold to Fairfield Road in Howell to install construction signs and start preparation work in advance of the start of milling and paving. Traffic signal upgrades, guiderail, sidewalk, drainage and concrete ADA curb work on Route 33 Business along the 3-mile segment will take place in the daytime.
Overnight milling and paving is expected to begin this summer, after sidewalk, and shoulder work is completed. There may be limited daytime lane closures required during utility work. One lane of traffic will be maintained in each direction at all times. There will be a flagger directing alternating traffic in sections where only one lane in each direction is regularly available. The majority of the milling and paving work on Route 33 Business will occur with the following schedule:
Route 33 Business overnight lane closure schedule:
- Mondays through Thursdays from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day
- Fridays from 8 p.m. to 7 a.m. the next day
- Saturday nights from 8 p.m. to 8 a.m. the next day
- Sunday nights from 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day
Any ramp closures when necessary will take place overnight with the lane closure schedule above. Two consecutive ramps will not be closed simultaneously, to help accommodate detours.
The traffic detours will be coordinated with state police. If work is completed earlier, the roadway will be reopened accordingly. NJDOT will provide advanced notification before any changes in the lane or ramp closure schedule.
The $2.7 million state-funded Route 33 Business paving project will resurface three miles of Route 33 Business in both directions between Kondrup Way in Freehold to Fairfield Road in Howell in Monmouth County. In addition, there will be guiderail upgrades at the Burkes Creek Culvert and the Kill Time Brook Culvert. Several signalized Route 33 Business intersections within the project area also will receive safety improvements such as ADA handicap curb ramps, count down heads, pedestrian push buttons and signal upgrades. The project is expected to be completed in 2018.
The following four (4) Route 33 Business intersections are scheduled to receive intersection
improvements:
- Kondrup Way & Route 33B
- Halls Mill Road/Asbury Avenue & Route 33B
- Five Points Road/Howell Road & Route 33B
- Brickyard Road/Fairfield Road & Route 33B
Variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info and our Facebook page. |
