Route 18 resurfacing project begins in
Middlesex and Monmouth Counties
Pedestrian walk signals and ADA ramps will be installed
(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a pavement rehabilitation project that will resurface six miles of deteriorated pavement, including isolated areas of reconstruction, on Route 18 in Middlesex and Monmouth Counties.
Beginning Monday, July 30, NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt, is scheduled to install road signage and variable message boards alerting motorists of the upcoming roadwork. The Route 18 project begins south of Texas Road in Marlboro, Monmouth County and continues north to Rues Lanes, through Old Bridge and East Brunswick in Middlesex County. All travel lanes will be maintained along the two-lane section of Route 18 from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m. with temporary lanes closures during the overnight hours for resurfacing work and traffic shifts as required.
The $14.2 million federally-funded Route 18, South of Texas Road to Rues Lane, Pavement Improvement project is designed to improve safety and traffic flow by making improvements to six miles of deteriorated pavement and the installation of pedestrian safety devices. The project is expected to be completed in late fall 2019.
The improvements include roadway milling and paving, guiderail upgrades, curb replacement, and installation of 41 ADA compliant ramps and construction of 1,000 linear feet of new and reconstructed sidewalks. In addition, pedestrian safety systems, including four signalized intersections with pedestrian push buttons and countdown signals, will be installed where needed.
NJDOT will construct Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) facilities along Route 18 including Fiber Optic Cable and Conduit, Computerized Traffic Signal Systems (CTSS), Dynamic Message Signs (DMS), and Camera Surveillance Systems (CSS).
Variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the resurfacing project.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
