Route 37 and Route 35 resurfacing project begins in Ocean and Monmouth Counties

Lane and ramp closures necessary

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a maintenance resurfacing project that will resurface stretches of Routes 37 and Route 35 in Ocean and Monmouth Counties. This project, which includes resurfacing four miles of Route 37, was expedited because of the poor condition of this portion roadway following the harsh winter.

Route 37 Resurfacing
Beginning today, Monday, July 30, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. and continuing Monday through Thursday for the next few weeks, NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt, is scheduled to temporarily close shoulders (7 a.m. - 5 p.m.) and single lanes (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.) for daytime concrete curb repair work along Route 37 in both directions between Fischer Boulevard to west of the Garden State Parkway in Toms River. Work will not be done Friday through Sunday to minimize the effect on summer shore traffic.

  • Starting Monday, August 13, from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Mondays through Thursdays, overnight milling and paving is scheduled to require shoulder and/or lane closures on Route 37, and is expected to be continue into the fall.
Route 37 Resurfacing
In addition, starting this week on Wednesday, August 1, from 7 a.m. until 5 p.m. and continuing Monday through Thursday for next few weeks, NJDOT’s contractor, Earle Asphalt, is scheduled to temporarily close shoulders (7 a.m. – 5 p.m.) and single lanes (9 a.m. - 3 p.m.) for daytime concrete repair work along Route 35 in both directions between Evergreen Avenue and Bradfiske Avenue in Neptune City, Lake Shore Drive and Green Oak Boulevard in Middletown, and Cherry Tree Farm Road/CR 516 in Middletown and Matawan Creek in Keyport.
  • Starting on Monday, August 20 from 8 p.m. until 6 a.m. Mondays through Fridays, overnight milling and paving is scheduled to require shoulder and/or lane closures on Route 35, and is expected to continue into the fall.

The $12.9 million state-funded resurfacing project will mill and pave 10 miles of Route 35 and four miles of Route 37. In addition, the contractor will reconstruct sections of sidewalk and curb, and install imaging, radar, and loop detection systems. The Route 37 portion of the project is expected to be complete this fall, and the Route 35 portion is expected to be complete in the summer of 2019.

Variable messaging signs (VMS) will be used throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the project.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
