Route 94 lane closures removed early as culvert replacement project advances in Sussex County

Alternating traffic no longer necessary during peak hours

(Trenton) -– New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the early removal of alternating traffic during the peak hours and weekends on Route 94, as this stage of the culvert replacement project over Black Creek Tributary in Vernon was completed earlier than expected.

Beginning at 11 p.m. Friday, August 17 until 6 pm., Sunday, August 19, NJDOT’s Contractor, Montana Construction Corp., Inc., is scheduled to reopen Route 94 northbound and remove the temporary traffic signal which maintained alternating traffic on Route 94 over the Black Creek Tributary near Rudetown Road/CR 517. The alternating traffic, which was put in place last summer, was originally expected to remain until the end of the summer, but because of advances made during construction, it will open ahead of schedule.

As the project advances to the next stage, Route 94 will require flaggers to maintain occasional alternating traffic, but not during peak hours or on weekends.

The $1.3 million federally-funded Route 94 over Back Creek Tributary culvert replacement project which began in June 2017, replaced a structurally deficient culvert, made the roadway wider to provide 4-foot wide shoulders, and will also upgrade the guiderails. The project is expected to be completed in late 2018.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the culvert replacement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before any upcoming road closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info or on the NJDOT Facebook page.
