Lackawanna Avenue and Rifle Camp Road closures necessary next week as the Route 3 Route 46 project advances
Daily closures required for utility work in Passaic County
(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced daytime closures next week of Lackawanna Avenue northbound and Rifle Camp Road southbound, as the Route 3/Route 46 Improvement Project advances in Passaic County.
Beginning at noon until 3 p.m. Tuesday, September 4, and continuing the rest of the week from 9 a.m. until 3 p.m. Wednesday, September 5 through Friday, September 7, NJDOT’s contractor J.F. Creamer & Sanzari, will begin alternating traffic with flagmen on Rifle Camp Road for water main work.
Starting at 9 a.m. until 3 p.m., Wednesday, September 5 and continuing daily until Friday, September 7 or until complete, NJDOT’s contractor is scheduled to close and detour the northbound lane on Lackawanna Avenue for drainage and conduit installation work.
Local access will be maintained for the residents during the scheduled detours. If work is completed earlier, the ramps and lanes will be reopened accordingly. Motorists are advised to use caution. The following signed detours will be in place during the daytime construction.

Lackawanna Avenue northbound detour: (Daily from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m.)
- Motorists will be directed to Notch Road
- Stay right onto Long Hill Road
- Turn right onto Lower Notch Road and follow to Lackawanna Avenue
The $40.8 million federally-funded Contract A portion of the Route 3, Route 46, Valley Road and Notch/Rifle Camp Road Interchange Improvements project, which started construction in January 2016, includes the construction of a new two-way service road, three signalized intersections, and two single-lane roundabouts parallel to Route 46 westbound to remove local traffic from the state highway. The project is being accomplished with two contracts, and is expected to be completed in fall 2022.
Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information on upcoming road or ramp closures.
