Route 21 northbound lane closure required for start of priority bridge repairs in Passaic County

Long-term shoulder closure necessary for bridge steel maintenance

(Trenton) -New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the closure of one right lane on Route 21 northbound to prepare for the start of priority repairs on the Entin Road Bridge over Route 21 in Clifton.

Beginning at 9:30 p.m. tonight, Friday, September 7 until 9 a.m. the next day, NJDOT’s contractor Mount Construction Inc., is scheduled to temporarily close one right lane on Route 21 northbound near River Road in Clifton to install construction barriers and restripe the roadway. Once completed, traffic on the right lane of Route 21 northbound will resume, and a work zone will be in place for approximately two months on the northbound shoulder underneath the Entin Road Bridge. Once the northbound work is complete, construction will switch to underneath to the Route 21 southbound section of the bridge.

The state-funded Entin Road Bridge over Route 21 maintenance project will make necessary repairs to retrofit steel I-beams, stiffeners and plates underneath the bridge as well as concrete repairs where required. Construction on the bridge is expected to begin underneath Route 21 northbound and then moved to the southbound side of Route 21 this fall. The next stage of construction will require the jacking of girders along a pier for concrete repairs underneath the bridge. The jacking operation is expected to require a long-term Route 21 southbound left lane closure.

The construction project over Route 21 in both directions will be advanced in stages and is expected to be complete in early 2019. In order to minimize impacts to motorists, at least two lanes in each direction will be maintained during construction. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road closures.
