I-78 eastbound ramp to I-287 northbound closed this weekend in Somerset County

Partial closure and detour of Exit 29 necessary as interchange improvements advance

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the weekend closure of the I-78 eastbound Exit 29 ramp to I-287 northbound as the I-287/ I-78 Interchange Improvements project advances in Bedminster, Somerset County.

Beginning at 10 p.m., Friday, November 9, until 5:00 a.m. Monday, November 12, NJDOT’s Contractor, Midlantic Construction LLC., is scheduled to close the I‑78 eastbound ramp to   I-287 northbound (the Exit 29 ramp to I-287 North/Morristown) for construction activities between the old ramp and the new loop from I-78 eastbound to I-287 northbound. The Exit 29 ramp to I-287 South/Somerville will remain open. The following weekend detour will be in place.

I-78 eastbound ramp to I-287 northbound Detour:
(From 10 p.m. Friday until 5 a.m. Monday)

  • Motorists on I-78 eastbound wishing to go to I-287 North/Morristown will be directed to stay left and continue on I-78 eastbound/Newark
  • Take the next newly constructed exit on the right onto I-287 northbound

On Monday morning, all traffic will return back onto Exit 29 for both the I-287 North (Morristown) and the I-287 South (Somerville) ramps.
The $24.5 million federally-funded I-287/I-78 Interchange Improvements project will enhance safety and improve traffic operations between the existing I-287 interchanges with I-78 and Routes 202/206. The project involves relocating the existing ramp from I-78 eastbound to I-287 northbound from a left side entry, as it currently exists, to a right side entry. This improvement will eliminate the downstream weave condition and reduce vehicle conflicts on I-287 northbound between Interchanges 21A and 22A. The project is advancing with work continuing on the construction of the new ramp structures. The project is on schedule, and expected to be completed in late 2019.

Variable message signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the interchange improvement project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before any upcoming road or ramp closures.

The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weather or other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
