Route 139 Lower Level restored to four lanes in Jersey City as Pulaski Skyway Contract 2 advances
Two lanes in each direction are open
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the restoration of Route 139 Lower Level to four lanes this past weekend in advance of the holiday as Pulaski Contract 2 advances in Jersey City.
NJDOT’s contractor, Schiavone Construction, worked overnight Friday, December 21 into Saturday morning, to repave and restripe a portion of Route 139 Lower Level. At the completion of the work, Route 139 Lower Level was restored to two lanes eastbound and two lanes westbound with the movable construction barrier separating traffic. This is the pre-construction configuration. The roadway had been reduced to three lanes throughout construction. No lane closures were necessary as the work took place in the closed lanes.
The four-lane configuration will remain in place until the spring, when one lane will again be closed with the moveable barrier in place. This configuration will remain for a few months to construct a new median barrier and for final paving of the roadway. The project is expected to be complete in late Spring 2019.
This work is part of the $104 million Pulaski Contract 2, which will repair and improve the upper and lower levels of Route 139. Route 139 links the eastern end of the Pulaski Skyway to the Jersey City waterfront. During this contract, the deck on Route 139 upper level eastbound will be replaced, along with five cross street bridges from Palisade Avenue to Kennedy Boulevard. Contract 2, which is nearing completion, is part of the $1 billion Pulaski Skyway rehabilitation project, which is being advanced through 10 separate construction contracts into the year 2020. The massive improvement project will extend the life of the Skyway by 75 years.
