Route 35 pavement preservation project begins next week in Middlesex and Monmouth Counties

Overnight lane closures required to begin shoulder rehabilitation

(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced the start of a pavement preservation project along nearly seven miles of Route 35, in both directions between CR 4 Holmdel Road/Main Street in Hazlet, Monmouth County and Route 9 in South Amboy, Middlesex County.

Beginning at 8 p.m., Monday, July 8, until 6 a.m. the next day, NJDOT’s contractor, Joseph Delfino Contracting Co., is scheduled to close the shoulder and right lane on Route 35 northbound, beginning at Holmdel Road in Hazlet and continuing through to Route 9 in South Amboy to begin pavement repair work. Construction will take place 8 p.m. to 6 a.m. the next day, Monday through Thursday, for approximately three months, progressing north from Hazlet to South Amboy and then continuing on the southbound side.

Construction will upgrade or replace curbs and inlets, replace storm water grates, repair, micro-mill and pave Route 35 with slurry seal, in both directions, including some ramps.  Traffic will be maintained at all times during daytime hours. 

The $3.8 million state and federally-funded Route 35 pavement preservation project will extend the pavement life, improve safety and enhance ride quality for motorists while reducing future maintenance costs. Route 35 will be milled and paved and some ramps within the project limits will be resurfaced. Substandard inlets will be upgraded or replaced and rumble strips will be applied. The project is expected to be completed by the fall of 2019.

Variable message signs are being used throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the pavement preservation project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before any road closures.
