I-287 Turnpike to Stelton Road
resurfacing project begins
More than 150,000 drivers who travel the 5.9 mile stretch of I-287 daily between the New Jersey Turnpike in Edison Township to Stelton Road in South Plainfield Borough will have a smoother ride when NJDOT’s $40 million resurfacing project is completed in November 2008.
Beginning this month NJDOT will rehabilitate the I-287 mainline by a full-depth replacement and asphalt overlay. Then we will replace all of the deteriorated bridge decks that carry I-287 over Durham Avenue near Stelton Road and over Route 1 in Edison Township. NJDOT will also patch and repair the remaining bridge decks.
In order to facilitate construction, NJDOT will close and shift lanes during construction. Local officials, residents and police have been informed of the need to rehabilitate the deteriorated concrete pavement and bridge decks, and they will be advised of traffic pattern changes throughout construction.
To alleviate travel problems during construction, NJDOT has installed an Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) to monitor the traffic in the work zone. The ITS will relay real-time work zone travel conditions to variable message signs (VMS) that will alert motorists of upcoming construction activities and traffic pattern changes.
Top on the list of immediate projects, NJDOT will rehabilitate the deteriorated five-mile stretch of I-287 between Edison Township and South Plainfield Borough.
