Route 166 lane and ramp closures required for improvements project in Toms River
Long term traffic shift necessary as
safety improvements advances
(Trenton) - New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) officials today announced lane and ramp closures on Route 166 for a long term traffic shift as the Route 166 intersection safety improvements project advances in Toms River.
Beginning tomorrow at 10 p.m. Wednesday, November 15 until 5 a.m. the next day, NJDOT’s contractor New Prince Concrete, is scheduled to close lanes on Route 166 between Route 37 and CR 623/Old Freehold Road to install construction barriers and restripe the roadway. All Route 166 traffic will be shifted east onto Route 166 northbound, maintaining one lane in each direction. The traffic shift will create a work zone on the western side of the roadway.
Route 37 westbound to Route 166 southbound detour:
As a result of the long term traffic shift, the Route 37 westbound ramp to 166 southbound will be closed. The following detour will remain in place until further notice.
- Motorists on Route 37 westbound will be directed to the next exit for Route 9 southbound/Garden State Parkway (GSP)
- Stay right and take the first GSP Exit 82 onto Route 37 eastbound/Island Beach State Park
- Continue on Route 37 eastbound and make a right at the first light onto Route 166 southbound/Main Street
The $11.7 million Route 166 intersection safety improvements project made possible by the Transportation Trust Fund (TTF) will upgrade the intersection of Route 166 with Route 37 by installing a raised median barrier between opposing traffic, improve the roadway geometry, make traffic signal improvements between Highland Parkway and Old Freehold Road, and widen the roadway by constructing a new through lane on Route 166 northbound and southbound. In addition, the project will make drainage improvements, construct a retaining wall along the west side of Route 166 adjacent to the Dover Mall redevelopment and install additional sign structures. The project which began in March 2016, was suspended in July 2017 due to the TTF Freeze, and is now expected to be completed in 2019.
Variable message signs and detour signs are being utilized throughout the project limits to provide advance notification to motorists of all traffic pattern changes associated with the safety improvements project. Throughout the project, NJDOT will provide information before upcoming road or ramp closures.
The precise timing of the work is subject to change due to weatheror other factors. Motorists are encouraged to check NJDOT's traffic information website www.511nj.org for real-time travel information and for NJDOT news follow us on Twitter @NJDOT_info.
