9 Metro
Park Loop Demonstration Project
The Situation |
The Metro Park employment center attracts
approximately 7,000 + employees daily. The Metro Park Loop, operated by NJ Transit through
a contract with Academy Bus, provides bus service in an area that includes portions of
Edison, Metuchen, Woodbridge Township, and Metro Park. The "Loop" consists of
five individual lines that connect the Metuchen, Metro Park and Woodbridge rail stations,
transfer points to connecting bus services and some intermediate points, e.g., Woodbridge
Center, Roosevelt Hospital. The "Loop" does not presently penetrate
neighborhoods, provide direct access to major employment or retail centers, connect the
various routes in the service areas. Existing headways are 20-40 minutes in length and
passenger fare in$0.50. |
|
|
The Proposal |
Convert the Metro Park loop into a fast,
frequent and free-to-the-rider shuttle service that connects residential areas, employment
sites, retails establishments and transit stations. |

The Locations |

|
|
The Actions |
-- Run as a demonstration
program for a 3-6 month period
-- Maintain the five separate service segments, but modify equipment,
routings, headways and fare structure:
A 22-25 passenger vehicle, either limousine or shuttle-type, to replace
the existing 40 passenger vehicle
Expand the routings to include neighborhoods (at school bus stops &
other key intersections)
Run 10-15 minute headways during peak periods and the mid-day lunch
period
-- Provide a free or "token" fare of $0.25 during the test period |
|
|
Estimated Annual Cost ($Millions) |
$0.5 |
|
|
Overall Traffic Benefits |
Low (modeling did not consider transit routes
individually; more detailed analysis for each route is needed to better determine
benefits/cost) |
|
|
Other Impacts and Considerations |
Significant undertaking in terms of
coordination. |
