Department of Transportation

Overview

The New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) research staff works directly with university and other research professionals to find workable solutions to problems that affect the safety, mobility and accessibility of New Jersey’s residents, workers, visitors and businesses. The goal is to enhance the quality and cost effectiveness of the policies, practices, standards and specifications that are used in planning, building and maintaining New Jersey's transportation infrastructure.

NJDOT research customers and other interested transportation practitioners (e.g. MPOs, county and local governments, and other transportation subject matter experts from trade, universities, and NGOs) are encouraged to submit research ideas to help inform the next round of research RFPs.

NJDOT research customers may submit a research idea by following the link to the NJDOT Transportation Research Ideas website. Project status, guidelines, formats and forms and useful links to other local, state and national agencies are available here.

The NJDOT’s Innovation Program works to identify, develop, promote, and institutionalize innovative transportation-related ideas, practices, and initiatives within the Department and beyond. Please visit our Technology Transfer (T2) website which supports Innovation Program goals by increasing awareness of transportation-related issues within New Jersey, promoting an ongoing exchange of ideas, translating the latest state-of-the-art trends and technology practices, showcasing innovation, and disseminating research results in a form that can be readily applied to current transportation problems.

The T2 website is also home to New Jersey’s State Transportation Council (STIC). The NJ STIC identifies and rapidly deploys proven, yet underutilized innovations to shorten project delivery, enhance safety, reduce congestion, and improve environmental sustainability.
