The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) has completed final design for the I-295 pavement repair and rubblization project located in the townships of Westampton, Burlington, Florence, Mansfield, Springfield and Bordentown, in Burlington County from milepost 44.9 to milepost 56.8. The construction area extends from Rancocas-Mount Holly Road (Exit 45) to Route 130 (Exit 57). Construction began February 2010 and is expected to be completed by November 2011. As of November 2011, the project is substantially complete. Lanes will be closed as needed for the installation of permanent guide rail and Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS) devices. The estimated completion of this work is late Fall 2012. The proposed project includes reconstruction of both I-295 northbound and southbound. The work includes rubblizing and overlaying of the existing concrete pavement and reconstructing the asphalt shoulders. Areas under bridges will be undercut to maintain or increase the vertical clearances. Acceleration and deceleration lanes will be lengthened to meet current standards where warranted. The project will also include drainage, guide rail, median, tree clearing and electrical work, as well as signage, Intelligent Transportation Systems (ITS), minor bridge and ramp work. Ramp sections closed to I-295 will be reconstructed, while sections furthest from the highway will be milled and resurfaced. Each direction of I-295 has an existing typical section width of 51 feet: three 12-foot lanes, a 12-foot right shoulder and a three-foot left shoulder, separated by a 54-feet-wide grass and wooded median. The proposed typical section has a 52-foot width. Inside shoulders on I-295 northbound and southbound will be reconstructed and widened to four feet. There are five interchanges within the project limits. Most of the ramps will be reconstructed adjacent to I-295 and the remaining portion milled and resurfaced. The project design proposes five main construction stages which require numerous sub stages. Ramps will be closed and detoured at specific locations as needed.
