Overview

Route 18 East Brunswick project corridor location map

Route 18 is a heavily traveled commuter and commercial corridor in East Brunswick Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey. There are three travel lanes in each direction and no shoulders, a multitude of right-in/right-out connections to driveways and intersecting streets, nine signalized intersections and two closely spaced interchanges at Cranbury and Milltown roads. There are jughandle ramps at each signalized intersection.

The improvements under the Route 18, East Brunswick, Drainage and Pavement Rehabilitation Project will rehabilitate pavement and improve drainage along Route 18 from milepost 35.40 to milepost 39.54 in East Brunswick, as well as at the Cranbury and Milltown roads interchanges. Additional improvements included in the project are as follows:

  • Connection of sidewalks along with associated curb ramp and driveway improvements throughout the corridor
  • Operational enhancements at the Edgeboro Road/Old Bridge Turnpike and Tices Lane intersections, including pedestrian/bus access
  • View of Route 18 looking north from Milltown Road overpass, Milepost 37.3
  • Traffic signal improvements to meet current standards and Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) requirements
  • Guide rail and barrier improvements to meet current Manual for Assessing Safety Hardware (MASH) compliance standards
  • Upgrades to existing utilities.
The NJDOT awarded a contract for construction of the project to Earle Asphalt Company in June 2022. Construction activities commenced in January 2023, with substantial project completion anticipated in summer 2026.
