Overview
Route 46 is a major east-west route for New Jersey commuters and shoppers but also for travelers and motor carriers traveling between Pennsylvania and New York. The transportation projects now in progress are expected to maintain the safety and efficiency of the roads and bridges for these users.
The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) is investing $195.4
million to improve safety by repairing six
locations on Route 46 from Clifton to Fairfield in Passaic and Essex counties.
Motorists are encouraged to drive carefully to protect themselves and
those who work in the construction zone. Forming carpools
and vanpools
by completing NJDOT's free online ridesharing
matching application, or taking the bus
or train will relieve personal stress and traffic congestion. Many
park
and rides serve this travel area.
NJ TRANSIT has a vanpool
subsidy program in the I-80, Route 46, Route 23 and Route 3 Corridors.
The construction contracts contain provisions to ensure motorist and
work zone safety and travel mobility. These include a towing service,
special duty police and keeping lanes open during typical rush hours.
They also include incentives and disincentives for keeping on schedule.
