Overview
The Route 46, Route 23 and I-80 Interchange in Wayne is one of the busiest crossroads in the state, carrying over 300,000 vehicle a day. In addition, it serves major area businesses, including the Willowbrook Mall.
This $66 million multiple stage project, that includes rebuilding eight bridges is expected to last two and a half years. Construction began in Fall 2005.
The work is intended to enhance safety and operations among the intersecting highways and address the deteriorating condition of the existing roadways and bridges.
- Bridges will be reconstructed and/or widened to improve overall condition, to increase vertical clearance and to increase shoulder widths.
- Route 46 westbound will be widened to provide acceleration and deceleration lanes at Galesi Drive.
- Route 46 eastbound will be widened to provide a continuous auxiliary lane between the Service Road East and Riverview Drive.
- The Route 46 westbound Service Road between the ramp and the West Belt overpass ramps to Willowbrook Mall will be replaced with an auxiliary lane to increase the weave distance.
- Route 23 northbound roadway beneath NJ TRANSIT's Boonton Line structure will be widened to provide a fourth lane giving two ramps their own lane.
- One ramp will be removed and traffic will be directed to an existing ramp to provide a longer weave section on Route 23 northbound.
- The exit from the Willowbrook Mall to Route 46 eastbound will be relocated to the west and Route 46 will be widened to provide an auxiliary lane.
- A portion of Fairfield Road (County Route 679) will be relocated to improve its connection with Route 46 westbound.
- All signage will be improved and new overhead signs will be placed to direct motorists from Route 23 southbound to I-80 westbound.
- Illumination levels throughout the interchange will be increased to improve nighttime visibility.
