Eligibility Criteria

The New Jersey Department of Transportation's (NJDOT) Tourist Oriented Directional Signs (TODS) program is intended to enhance motorist safety by identifying places that may interest tourists and providing directions to them. Each facility must receive more than 50 percent of its customers or more than 50 percent of its annual sales from outside the immediate area.

The following types of facilities are eligible to participate in the TODS program. These eligible facilities must also meet the participation requirements. New Jersey Logos, L.L.C. will determine if eligibility criteria and participation requirements are met after the submission of an application and review of the regulations. There is no charge for an application.

Participation Requirements

Eligible facilities must meet all participation requirements. General participation requirements apply to all facilities. Specific participation requirements may also apply.

General participation requirements for all TODS facilities include:

  • Must be within five miles of the state highway.
  • Must be open for at least six hours per day and five days per week for at least 20 consecutive weeks in a year (not required for scheduled events).
  • Must be licensed and approved by all appropriate authorities.
  • Must maintain free public restrooms (not required for Agri-tourism facilities).
  • Must have a public telephone available.
  • Must have free drinking water available.
  • Must comply with all laws regarding public accommodation.
  • Must be open and available to the general public.

Specific participation requirements for particular TODS facilities include:

Agri-tourism facilities

  • Must be within 10 miles of the state highway.
  • Must be open for at least six hours per day and five days per week in season.
Camping facilities
  • Must be within 10 miles of the state highway.
  • Must be open seven days per week, 360 days per year unless designated as seasonal.
  • Must have a public telephone.
Civic areas
  • A TODS sign for a civic area can't identify individual businesses.

Fuel facilities

  • Must be within one mile of the state highway.
  • Must be open at least 16 hours per day, seven days per week, 360 days per year.
  • Must have gas, fuel and oil for cars, trucks and other vehicles.
  • Must provide tire repair or information about available tire repair elsewhere.
  • Must provide compressed air and free water for vehicles.
  • Must have a public telephone.

Restaurants

  • Must be open at least 12 hours per day, six days per week unless designated as seasonal.
  • Must have a public telephone.
  • Must have its own primary entrance from the public parking area, if in a mall or shopping center.
