Why is this work being done? |
A. |
The purpose of this project is to improve safety and reduce congestion through the area by providing three through lanes and an outside shoulder or auxiliary lane in each direction on Route 1. To improve the flow of traffic along Route 1 the signalized intersections are being widened and turn ramps are being added. Some local roadways are being closed off to Route 1 to help improve safety as well as to help improve the function of the major intersections. |

The New Jersey Department of Transportation (NJDOT) awarded one contract for this work in June 2006 to Ferreira Construction Company of Branchburg. Eugene Raisley is the NJDOT Resident Engineer (732.750.3950) who will supervise the work. |

It is anticipated that the improvements will cost $75 million and will be funded by the Federal Highway Administration. This total includes costs for engineering, right of way, utilities and construction. |

The work is scheduled to go from 2006 to 2009 and will be done in stages that will reflect the needs of the community as well as the need to expedite the work. |

NJTRANSIT bus and train service is available through the area. The bus routes that serve Edison and Woodbridge are #801-802-803-804-805 Metropark Loops, #810 New Brunswick-Woodbridge Center, #813 Perth Amboy-Middlesex County College and #62 Newark-Woodbridge-Perth Amboy.
