What's going on?
The New Jersey Department of Transportation plans to replace the Route 7 Wittpenn Bridge over the Hackensack River and all its approach ramps.
What is the status of the project?
The Preliminary Design phase of the project was completed in December 2007 and the Final Design and construction phases are underway. Contract 1 was completed in December 2014. Contract 2 was completed in January 2016. Contract 3 was awarded in January 2015 and is scheduled for completion in early 2018. Contract 3A was awarded in May 2016 with anticipated completion in Fall 2018. Contract 4 was advertised on March 30, 2017.
How much will the project cost?
The total cost to replace the bridge and its access ramps is currently estimated at $480 million, funded by federal funds and the Lincoln Tunnel Access Program.
When will the project be completed?
he project will be constructed in five separate contracts. Contract 1 was completed in December 2014. Contract 2 is was completed in January 2016. Contract 3 is in construction and is scheduled for completion in early 2018. Contract 3A was awarded in May 2016 with anticpated completion in Fall 2018. Contract 4 is scheduled for award in Summer 2017. The entire project will be completed by the end of 2022.
How will the public get updates as the project progresses?
This Web site will be updated periodically to reflect project developments. Newspaper and radio traffic reports may also carry stories.
Will the existing bridge be maintained?
The existing bridge will be maintained until the new structure is in place and traffic can be transferred to the new structure. Maintaining existing traffic patterns throughout construction will be a prerequisite. The superstructure of the existing bridge will be demolished once the new bridge is open to traffic.
