Dredged material management along the Delaware River relies on a combination of hydraulic and clamshell dredging techniques, followed by both confined upland disposal and/or beneficial use. The main channel is hydraulically dredged by the United States Army Corps of Engineers (USACE), with the material pumped into confined upland disposal sites (CDFs) located along the River (mostly in New Jersey). Private berth dredging is a combination of clamshell and hydraulic dredging followed by pumping into CDFs. Recent efforts by the New Jersey Department of Transportation's Office of Maritime Resources (NJDOT/OMR) and others have resulted in several successful demonstrations of beneficial use for development (River Winds Golf Course) and remediation (PA mine reclamation). The Palmyra Cove site is a model of sustainable dredged material management. Currently, NJDOT/OMR is working with the Philadelphia USACE office to develop a Regional Dredging Team (RDT) that will provide a cooperative agency atmosphere to further encourage beneficial use of dredged material and renewable CDF capacity. Participants will include representatives from the various Port Authorities, Delaware Valley Regional Planning Commission (DVRPC), Delaware River Basin Commission, New Jersey Department of Environmental Protection (NJDEP), Department of Natural Resources and Environmental Control (DNREC), Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP), NJDOT and USACE.
