The Delaware River Scenic Byway extends from the Route 29 tunnel in Trenton to the Uhlerstown-Frenchtown Bridge in Frenchtown. The Delaware River and the Delaware and Raritan Feeder Canal are visible for much of the drive as the Byway passes by the State Capitol and through the historic riverside towns of Titusville, Lambertville, Stockton, Raven Rock and Frenchtown, and the scenic landscape of farm fields, forests and cliffs.

This Byway became the first New Jersey Scenic Byway when it was designated in 1996 and it became one of two New Jersey Byways that were nationally designated in 2009. The lower Delaware River which includes a large portion of the Byway - from approximately Washington Crossing Bridge north to Frenchtown - was also designated as a National Wild and Scenic River in 2000.

Visitors should take some time to enjoy the South Riverwalk Park located on top of the tunnel and include an event at the Trenton Thunder Arm and Hammer Park located just north of the tunnel in Waterfront Park.

The State Capitol, visible from Route 29, offers guided tours that are approximately an hour in length Monday through Friday on the hour from 10 am to 3 pm. Within walking distance visitors can also spend time at the New Jersey State Museum, the Planetarium, the State Library and the Old Barracks.

North of Trenton, Route 29 offers impressive views of the Delaware River. Three outstanding state parks are located along the Byway. The Delaware and Raritan Canal State Park offers a 30-mile bicycling and walking trail, nine fishing and boating access areas to the Delaware River, and the historic site of Prallsville Mills located in Stockton; Washington Crossing State Park commemorates a pivotal event in the nation's revolutionary war history and is located directly adjacent to the Washington Crossing Bridge; and Bull's Island Recreation Area is a forested island in the Delaware River with access to Pennsylvania by a historic steel suspension pedestrian bridge.

Visitors to the area have many venues to appreciate the historic, cultural and recreational features of this region in city, town and countryside settings. Mercer County Park Commission offers views into the past at the Howell Living History Farm. The Holcombe-Jimison Farmstead Museum is dedicated to the preservation of Hunterdon County's 18th, 19th and early 20th century cultural and agricultural heritage.
