Q. |
Where
is the construction
project? |
A. |
The project is located
on Route 1 between
milepost 25.17 and
milepost 26.17 in North
Brunswick Township,
Middlesex County. |
|
|
Q. |
Why
is this work necessary? |
A. |
The New Jersey
Department of Transportation
(NJDOT) is replacing
the Route 1 Bridge
because of its severely
deteriorated condition.
The project will
improve safety by
reducing the horizontal
and vertical curvature
below the bridge
and improve the sight
distance on Route
1 over the bridge. |
|
|
Q. |
Is the
bridge being eliminated? |
A. |
No. The bridge
is being replaced
- not eliminated.
The new bridge will
be slightly lower
due to the removal
of the abandoned
railroad below and
the previously required
under clearance for
railroad cars. The
new height will improve
the sight distance
for motorists traveling
on Route 1. |
|
|
Q. |
Besides
a new bridge are there
other project improvements
to be anticipated? |
A. |
The final
design plan includes standard
width lanes on Route
1 with acceleration/deceleration
lanes. Additional
lanes will be added
under the bridge
with shoulders, sidewalks
and curbs throughout
the project area.
Two new traffic signals
will be added to
move motorists safely
along College Farm
Road and under the
bridge. The removal
of the abandoned
Sayreville Railway
under the bridge
will extend College
Farm Road across
the abandoned railway
and expand access
options for travelers
on either side of
Route 1. |
|
|
Q. |
How
long will be bridge
underpass (U-turn movement)
remain closed? |
A. |
The NJDOT project
has completed the
southbound bridge
structure and is
currently constructing
the northbound bridge
and associated steel
support beams, foundations
and abutments. In
order to protect
the safety of the
vehicular, pedestrian
and bicyling public
the underpass will
remain closed until
the substantial completion
of the project in
Fall 2011.
|
|
|
Q. |
What
are the alternate routes
while the underpass
is closed? |
A. |
The NJDOT has recommended
an alternate
route travel plan for motorists
destined for the campuses/properties
on either side of the
bridge by utilizing
the interchange to
the north at Ryders
Lane and to the south
at Routes 1/130. |
|
|
Q. |
What
is the speed limit
through this area? |
A. |
The posted speed
limit is 40 mph through
the construction
zone and is strictly
enforced 24 hours
a day. Please remember
to be alert and use
caution when traveling
through a construction
zone.
|
|
|
Q. |
Where
can travelers obtain
information? |
A. |
Traffic information
will be provided
on variable message
signs along Route
1 and on NJDOT's
511NJ
Travel Information
Web site and on
the 511NJ phone system.
|
|
|
Q. |

is the NJDOT Project
Manager? |
A. |

the day to day design
activities. Upendra
Patel is the NJDOT
Resident Engineer managing
all construction-related
activities. Additionally,
