Construction
Stages and Schedule
The upgrading
of the roadway will be done
in three
geographic sections,
each approximately four miles
in length beginning at the
entrance to Island Beach
State Park at Milepost (MP)
0.0 and ending at the Point
Pleasant-Bay Head border
at MP 12.5. Given the scope
of the work, this type of
project typically takes four
to six years to complete.
The New Jersey Department
to Transportation (NJDOT)
has accelerated the schedule
to complete the work sooner.
The Department
has coordinated with local
officials to minimize inconvenience
for motorists, residents
and businesses, especially
during summer seasons, while
at the same time scheduling
the work in a manner that
creates an opportunity to
complete all three construction
contracts
in as short a timeframe as possible.
The first section
(MP
9.0 to MP 1 2.5) for construction
was the northernmost
3.5 miles of the road, from
the border between Point
Pleasant Beach and Bay Head
to the border between Mantoloking
and Brick. Through this section
of the project, one lane
exists in each direction.
Advanced utility construction started in May 2013 and drainage work began in July 2013. Contractors
initiated work on drainage
and pump systems along side
streets. Major roadwork along
Route 35 began
after Labor Day 2013. Reconstruction
work was performed in
1/4-mile segments with alternating
traffic patterns within the
work zones. As of June 2015, construction activity on Route 35 is
complete with minor landscape and drainage work expected to be completed this Fall.
Work on the other two
sections, MP
0.0 to 4.0 (Berkeley,
Seaside Park, Seaside Heights and Toms River) and MP
4.0 to MP 9.0 (Lavallette,
Toms River and Brick) began in August
2013. Throughout
these sections, Route 35
generally consists of a divided
highway that offers two travel
lanes in each direction over
the remaining nine miles
of the project area.
As of June 2015, the final pavement for Route 35 between MP
0.0 to 4.0 has been completed with all Route 35 travel lanes open. Temporary lane closures for minor sidewalk and pedestrian facility work and landscaping will be completed this Fall.
As of June 2015, between MP
4.0 to MP 9.0, all Route 35 travel lanes are open with shoulder closures being necessary for work zones in select locations. Sidewalks and pedestrian facility work are continuing. All work is expected to be completed this Fall. |
