Christie Administration announces grant for Anderson House during Season of Service

NJDOT Commissioner James Simpson joined with Anderson House, Inc. Board President Cindy Czaskos and Executive Director Jan Holmstrup as the Christie Administration announced a grant of nearly $70,000 for the treatment center during its second annual Season of Service initiative.  Following a meeting with Anderson House officials and clients, Commissioner Simpson volunteered his time, performing yard and clean-up work with the group.

NJDOT Assistant Commissioner Anthony Attanasio accompanied children who attend the Somerset Hills Learning Institute in Bedminster as NJ TRANSIT and NJDOT teamed up with the Jets for the third annual New York Jets Dream Express event. The Season of Service event included free tickets and refreshments for the group courtesy of the Jets and complimentary NJ TRANSIT travel to and from Secaucus Junction to the Jets home game.

Lowe's will provide more than 22,000 free grab-and-go, heat-and-serve Thanksgiving meals for residents of the communities hardest hit by Hurricane Sandy in New Jersey and New York.

Tourist Oriented Destination Sign (TODS) Sign Program Event

NJDOT Deputy Commissioner Joseph Mrozek and Secretary of Agriculture Douglas H. Fisher visited Alstede Farms in Chester Township to highlight the revised TODS program. Alstede Farm is one of 23 agritourism operations in the state benefitting from highway signs directing drivers to their locations.

NJDOT Director of Civil Rights and Affirmative Action Melanie Armstrong highlighted the accomplishments and value of the NJDOT-administered Urban Youth Corps summer jobs program at an event held along Route 30 in Camden. Armstrong was joined by NJDOT Deputy Commissioner Joe Mrozek, representatives from Camden and Pennsauken and members of the Work Group, who created decorative landscape boxes and covered over graffiti at the location.

Plauderville Station Rail Safety System Unveiling Event

Transportation Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chairman James Simpson joined NJ TRANSIT Executive Director James Weinstein at Plauderville Station in Garfield to unveil a new “Another Train Coming” rail safety device designed to enhance pedestrian safety around the tracks. The installation is part of an ongoing effort to ramp up rail safety across the state through recommendations from the NJ Safety at Railroad Crossings Leadership Oversight Committee.

Route 27 Pedestrian Hybrid Beacon activation

Commissioner James Simpson joined with NJ TRANSIT Executive Director James Weinstein and Woodbridge Mayor John McCormac to activate a new pedestrian beacon at the corner of Route 27 and Magnolia Road in Woodbridge. The new beacon, the first of its kind on a state highway, will provide safer pedestrian access to and from Metropark Station.

Route 52 Causeway Bridge Ribboncutting
Ocean City and Somers Point, NJ
Commissioner James Simpson joined with Congressman Frank LoBiondo, Somers Point mayor Jack Glasser, Ocean City mayor Jay Gillian and many others at the Grand Opening Ceremony for the new $400 million Route 52 Causeway connecting Somers Point and Ocean City. This is one of the largest construction projects in NJDOT history and the Department has delivered the fully opened bridge in time for the critical summer season.

Commissioner James S. Simpson highlighted a new component of the Christie Administration's 'Clean Up NJ' initiative with an event announcing the revival of the New Jersey Adopt-A-Highway program. Simpson was joined at the event held at the Coca-Cola plant along Route 130 in South Brunswick by South Brunswick mayor Frank Gambatese (speaking) and inaugural participants who will be adopting segments of highway, NJ Clean Communities Council representatives and local officials to raise awareness of the new program and encourage broad participation by businesses and civic groups.

Commissioner Simpson and Coca-Cola Vice President of Market Field Operations, Mike Chidester, braved the rain to unveil the new Adopt-A-Highway sign to close the event and officially kickoff the revived program.

Safety Service Patrol sponsorship announcement event

NJDOT Deputy Commissioner Joseph Mrozek, representing the Christie Administration, announced a public-private partnership with State Farm to sponsor the Department's Safety Service Patrol (SSP) program. SSP drivers patrol 225 linear miles of interstate and state highways throughout New Jersey and through financial support provided by State Farm, NJDOT will be able to reallocate resources to other high-priority safety needs. Also present at the announcement were George Hanley, motorist assisted by SSP, New Jersey State Police Major Ed Cetnar, State Farm Vice President-Agency John Antonacci, Federal Highway Administration District Administrator Ernie Blaise and NJDOT Executive Director of Transportation Systems Management Dhanesh Motiani.

Airport Improvement grant announcement

Commissioner James Simpson met with officials at Princeton Airport to announce nine grants that will provide almost $2.2 million in state funding for projects that enhance safety, promote state-of-good repair or advance studies for potential improvements at eight of New Jersey’s general aviation airports. NJDOT Commissioner and NJ TRANSIT Board Chairman James Simpson released a report containing specific proposals to reduce pedestrian and trespasser fatalities at railroad grade crossings and other areas along railroad tracks. An oversight committee and three subcommittees were formed in response two incidents in October 2010 that resulted in three fatalities and one non-fatal injury to four teenagers.
