With the survey and stake out completed, crews begin preparing the ground at the Newell/Phelps Avenue roadway. This will be a new single outlet for these two roads. The single exit to the highway will provide a greater measure of safety for motorists traveling on Route 18 southbound. |
This section of Route 18 that crosses Albany Street is being built in thirds under traffic conditions. The first third of the structure (southbound lanes) have been demolished and temporary lanes provide continued traffic flow during reconstruction. Crews begin creating the footing for the new bridge which will span Albany Street with no center pier, which will provide for express lanes and improved sight lines for motorists on Albany Street. |
Paving operations are under way at the New Street Bridge. The structure which will now provide access to New Street from both northbound and southbound Route 18, is also pedestrian friendly with a pedestal staircase and a walkway leading across to the riverside of this structure, providing access to Boyd Park. |
Crews begin the excavations on southbound Route 18 below the Antilles Field wall in preparation for the roadway's expansion. The George Street Bridge is in the background which will be torn down and replaced. The new bridge will provide motorists both northbound and southbound access from the George Street intersection. |
Looking north, this shows where the exit ramp from George Street onto Route 18 southbound will shift to the west to allow for expansion of the mainline and provide for express lanes through the corridor. Crews create a single-faced tieback will below Gibbons Circle. Once completed, the wall to the right will be demolished and the ramp will be shifted onto the new roadway next to the wall. |
